Beth, Check In and Chat

27-year-old Beth volunteers with Volunteer Responders, providing Check In and Chat calls to support the mental health and wellbeing of people who may be isolated or vulnerable.

Beth first joined the program during the pandemic, providing friendly phone calls and encouragement to people across England.

"I really loved volunteering with Check In and Chat during the pandemic. I found it difficult being at home and knowing so many people were struggling. And so, volunteering was a way for me to do my bit and play my part.

"I was thrilled when I learned the programme was returning, once you start volunteering you never want to stop! It’s such an amazing feeling knowing you are supporting someone.

"It’s a privilege being able to volunteer. I am so glad that I have done it and I’ve learned so much. As a volunteer, you get to speak with so many people from all walks of life. I’ve spoken to some incredible people who I have not only been able to help but they’ve also made a positive difference to me. One of the older gentlemen I supported would read me motivational speeches and quotes. It was something he did routinely, to encourage himself. It was really special speaking with him; we would both always finish the call smiling.

"It’s amazing the difference a phone call can make, you can hear their happiness over the phone. Having someone there to talk with and get encouragement from is a great boost for them. And it’s the same for me. The calls make my day, just as much as theirs! It’s a great feeling knowing you have helped someone. I would definitely recommend volunteering to anyone thinking about it – you won’t regret it."
